Medical Laboratory Equipments And Its Safe Handling

Several tests are conducted in a medical laboratory for the information on the health of a patient. For the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions different types of lab equipments are used. Scientists and physicians use different lab equipment to conduct experiments, collect data, testing of different parameters and health factors and carrying out serious measurements. This information helps the medical laboratory scientist to examine the medical state of a patient and thus give proper prescription.
The laboratory equipments are manufactured under strict scientific control and thus maintain highest level of safety standards. Medical laboratory procedures depend on various types of lab wares for checking and measuring critical fluid parameters.

Important Laboratory Equipment

The various tools and articles used in medical laboratory needs to be sterilized and disinfected. The most important activity to be followed is to keep each and every material used in lab perfectly sterilized. Normally chemicals are used for this purpose, and they become important ingredients of the laboratory.

The following equipments are used for the purpose of sterilization of the equipments:

Hot Air Oven: Hot air oven is electrically operated and thermostatically controlled device. The structure of oven is two – walled steel chamber equipment. The articles to be sterilized are placed inside it and are sterilized through hot air convection method.

Autoclave: An autoclave is made of metal jackets to maintain high pressures. Water inside it is boiled to produce high steam pressure. The tools to be sterilized are placed inside it and are disinfected through the generation of pressurized hot steam flow. 

Water bath: In medical laboratories water bath is used to heat things uniformly from all sides at a set temperature up to the boiling point of water.

Other common laboratory equipment used for various applications includes the following devices:

Weighing scales
: Weighing scales are used to find out the weight of different medical quantities that are large. On the other hand for the measurement of smaller quantities analytical balance is used.

Compound Microscope: No laboratory is complete without this sophisticated device. Compound microscope is to magnify the microscopic constituents of a human body specimen like blood, tissue etc which enables exact verification of its biological conditions.

Centrifuge: Centrifuge is used to determine the volume of packed cells of RBCs. A centrifuge machine is used to quickly separate and deposit the molecular elements like cell. The process is called centrifugation. Its speed is represented in rotations per minute. Here, capillaries filled with blood samples are rotated at high speeds and the amount of RBC is calculated.

Precision Incubators: These incubators are suitable for different applications like in clinical, industry, research, and microbiology. The general-purpose incubators are the ideal choice for hematological, biochemical, pharmaceutical, microbiological studies.

Caliper: It is a medical device used to measure thickness of an object in millimeters. The thickness of subcutaneous fat tissue is measured by this instrument.

Hemacytometer: It is used for the counting of blood cells or particles in a sample. Glass Hemacytometer is a thick microscope slide to determine the number of particles in the given volume of liquid.

Safety

To work safely with hazardous chemicals you need to properly use laboratory equipments which can be done by maintenance and regular inspection of laboratory equipment. Many of the accidents that occur in the laboratory are the cause of improper use or maintenance of laboratory equipment. It is the duty of laboratory personnel to check if the equipments are maintained well, properly and safely used.

The following precautions should be kept in mind and the necessary adjustments should be made before working in the laboratory:

. Insulate all electrical equipment properly:  Every month inspect all the electrical cords visually for any damage. Rubber covered cords can be worn out by organic solvents and by ozone.

. Replace all damaged cords before any further use of the equipment is permitted: The replacement should be carried on by qualified personnel.

. Ensure the complete electrical isolation of electrical equipment and power supplies: All the power supplies should be enclosed in a manner that makes accidental contact with power circuits impossible.

. Minimize the condensation: If the electrical equipment is placed in a cold room, you will have to minimize the condensation that may enter the equipment. Cold rooms are risky as the atmosphere is frequently at a high relative humidity, and the possibility for water condensation is significant.

. Mount the equipment on a wall or vertical panel: This precaution will reduce the condensation problem.

. Avoid using variable auto transformers: Do not use variable autotransformers to control the speed of an induction motor as this will cause the motor to overheat and perhaps start a fire.
   
If the equipments are handled with care, they will work for long duration and without causing any harm. New innovations are rising day by day in the field of medical technology in NYC.
